How To Spend A Perfect Sunday on Gorée Island, Senegal

Updated: Nov 7, 2022

Île de Gorée or Gorée island has been an island destination known for its heart, its slowness and its history. Many of your faves have even enjoyed this special Senegalese location, including Stevie Wonder, Nelson Mandela and the Obama family.

In short, Gorée island has a vibe unlike anywhere else in Senegal. With it being such an easy trip from Dakar, we figured there is no better way to spend a Sunday than in this world-famous patch of serenity. Here is how we imagine a perfect, endless Sunday on this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Early morning beach stroll

If you’re coming from Dakar, you’ll likely come through Dakar’s main ferry terminal- Gare Maritime. After the short 20-minute journey, we recommend a long aimless walk on the ‘Little Gorée Beach’ – just to get yourself in slow, island mode.

House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves)

Next stop, Gorée’s House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves). This was the last station for enslaved Africans in Senegal. The famous Door of No Return is visited by many travelers all over the world. While this is often a very sobering experience for most Black travelers, it is certain to add some reality to your trip as you learn more of this history that makes up this now vibrant island in West Africa.

Perhaps a quick lunch stop will be needed after such a packed morning. There is no better way to Sunday brunch other than by the ocean. Honestly, we recommend trying out one of the many local spots – supporting the local fishing village environment and in turn being able to enjoy some of the best fish Senegal has to offer while engaging in conversation with local Senegalese people.

Art on Gorée Island

Did you know that Senegal has an established and flourishing arts community? Next we recommend visiting a gallery to get a closer look at the local arts culture on the island. Galerie De La PAIX is a favorite option for travelers interested in getting their art fix abroad.

Afterwards there will be plenty of time to browse some work by the many talented artisans on the island. Enjoy the afternoon checking out what is on offer – remember to explore the market for more artisanal pieces.

Sunset climb to the top of Île de Gorée

Finally, after an unforgettable da in Gorée island, taking it easy and indulging in art, history and good food, you’ll be ready to end your day taking in the sunset views from the top of Castle Île de Gorée. The view is breathtaking at any point of the day, but you’re welcome in advance because at sunset, the view of the sea and wider island is unreal.
